Democracy Day By FFK

JUNE 12TH, DEMOCRACY DAY AND NIGERIA'S DANCE OF DEATH Today is June 12th, our nation's Democracy Day and I have some home truths to tell. The struggle for June 12th was indeed a noble, worthy, cataclysmic and monumental one. It was also something of a nightmare which littered our fields with many corpses and soaked the very foundation of our nation with blood, sweat and tears. I can confirm that because I was deeply involved in it and for many years I, along with many others, fought for it's actualisation. Many were martyred, many were jailed, many were tortured and many were compelled to flee into exile. Great essayists, keen minds and profound writers and thinkers like Professor Adebayo Williams, Professor Wole Soyinka, Mr. Gbolabo Ogunsanwo, Justice Adewale Thompson and the great Chinwezu kept us going, fuelled our courage, stirred our passion, inspired our spirits and ignited souls with their powerful essays which we read eagerly and voraciously wherever we fo...

LGA Funds: Court deals another blow to state governors

The Federal High Court on Monday declined to restrain the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) from implementing its recent guidelines on local government funds. The judgment by John Tsoho of the Abuja Division marked yet another setback to the nation’s 36 governors in their effort to keep control of local government finances in their respective states. In a guideline that took effect on June 1, the NFIU directed banks not to honour transactions in the joint accounts of state and local governments. It said such accounts should only be used to distribute allocations to accounts of local governments directly. The Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) recently sued the NFIU, saying the directive was illegal because it contradicted the Constitution. The Constitution prescribed joint ownership of account between a state and all local government areas under it, but there have been claims that the governors have been mismanaging the funds by bullying local authorities into silence. ...

Democracy Day: Why June 12 is more significant than May 29 – Tinubu

Image
The National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, says May 29 does not carry the weight of significance that June 12 carries in the country’s democratic sojourn. Mr Tinubu said this in a statement entitled ‘June 12: The Truth that Sets Democracy Free in Our Land’, released by his Media Adviser, Tunde Rahman, on Tuesday in Lagos. He said what was being commemorated on May 29 of every year since 1999 had been the handover of power from the military regime to the elected civilian administration. According to him, June 12 coincides with the day that the seed of today’s democratic sprouting was sown 26 years ago. “May 29 is at best an arbitrary date on which the military chose to hand over the reins of power to an elected civilian government in 1999. “Observing May 29 as democracy day delinks the country’s democratic experience since 1999 from the protracted and bitter struggle against military dictatorship from June 12, 1993, till the forced exit of the mi...

Without a professional club and shattered financially after a bitter and acrimonious divorce case, he admits he had suicidal thoughts. "Sometimes I would lock myself in my room for three or four days. Just thinking and asking what's left. Even today, I still take antidepressants to help me because it is still a long road for me. One of the clearing agents Autojosh spoke to confirmed that he had been asked to pay a surface duty amount of N2,350,000 for a Mercedes Benz SUV. However, he got a shocker after he tried to input the details into the Customs server in order to proceed with the clearing process. "This N2,500,000 I'm seeing on this computer must be an error".. He said to himself. Another agent said he had calculated the total clearing cost of his customer's 2005 Toyota Camry using the usual surface duty of N201,000. Now, he has ...
